ULSPU Center for Open Education in the Russian language
In the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
Since 2023 by the order of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, Ulyanovsk State University of Education has been implementing a project aimed at developing the Russian language and education in the Russian language in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
As part of the project, Centers for Open Education in the Russian language have been opened in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Ulyanovsk State University of Education organizes
education for the citizens of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in
the Center for Open Education in the Russian language and other organizations
(in universities, in schools, in libraries, etc.) according to educational
programs of the common-cultural direction. Educational and
scientific-methodological events are also held as part of the project.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
All people interested in the training program, including schoolchildren, students, teachers, employees of tourist services, can be enrolled on educational courses.
Training is conducted in an interactive form with the use of presentation and video materials.
Language of training: Russian, English.
Educational course "History of author's (bard/amateur) song in Russia"
Course duration: 36 hours
The course is aimed at acquaintance of participants with history of author's song in Russia, with the genre of author's song; means, forms and methods of creative expression. Having attended the course, students will have an opportunity to get acquainted with works of the major representatives of bardic song in Russia: Bulat Okudzhava, Vladimir Vysotsky, Yuri Vizbor, Vadim Egorov, Alexander Dolsky.
At the end of the course you will have an idea of the connection between the history of bardic song and the history of Russia.
Educational course "Iconic Works of Russian Literature of the 19th-21st Centuries"
Course duration: 36 hours
This course examines the main stages of development of Russian classical literature, the major world-famous writings of the Russian classics.
This course will acquaint you with the works of prominent writers, such as N.V. Gogol, L. Tolstoy, I. Turgenev, A. Goncharov, which will help to form a holistic view of the moral and artistic values of the Russian classics. Who "The Sovereigns of Moscow" and Taras Bulba are, and what "At the Bottom" means and many other aspects of Russian folk life are revealed in different historical periods by Russian classics.
Educational course " Universal Human Values in Russian Culture and Art"
Course duration: 36 hours
The course is aimed at acquainting its participants with universal human values such as music, literature and painting, which have significance for humanity as a whole and reflect the eternal problems of human formation, aspirations and thoughts. Love and passion, valour and heroism, life and fate as a reflection of eternal themes in art - these concepts will be revealed in the context of Russian culture and art.
Educational course "Travelling around Russia"
Course duration: 36 hours
The educational program allows participants to virtually travel through the natural beauties of different parts of Russia, acquainting them with the diverse landscape, natural monuments, traditions of multinational Russia and folk crafts.
Educational course "Basic Facts of Russian History: Russia in the past and present"
Course duration: 36 hours
The course is aimed at studying the historical development of Russia from ancient times to the modern time, acquaints with the role of outstanding people in the main historical events.
Educational course "Russian Folklore for Foreigners"
Course duration: 36 hours
The course introduces a special cultural heritage of Russia, Russian folklore, as the diverse and unique phenomenon in Russian folk culture.
All participants of the educational courses will be awarded Certificates of Completion.

The meeting with an artist, a member of the Union of Writers of Russia, a songwriter, Doctor of Science in Philology – Vladimir Artamonov “Date with the author`s song”.
After visiting this event you will have a great opportunity to learn more about Vladimir Nikolaevich Artamonov - a member of the Union of Writers of Russia, a songwriter and Doctor of Science in Philology. Vladimir Nikolaevich will share his reminiscences and will tell you about his artistic endeavour, his own poetry and will play some of his songs.
Educational event “In the labyrinths of Russian Culture” (adventure game)
The participants of the game “In the labyrinths of the Russian culture” will have an opportunity to check and solidify their knowledge about the values of the Russian culture and art. In these “labyrinths’ you will know answers for the following questions: What does “Perfection” for a person mean? What are the eternal topics for discussion? And why is cuisine considered to be an indicator of history and everyday life?
Educational event “Symbols of Russia” (adventure game)
The atmosphere of a game will immerse the participants in the atmosphere of searching for the answers to different questions concerning symbols of Russia. While playing the game, the participants will travel through variant stops and will learn: why Moscow is called “Zlatoglavaya” (gold-headed), why Ekaterinburg was called so, who the founder of Saint-Petersburg was, what the national symbol of Russia is.
Educational event “The tour into the past of Russia” (quiz)
The participation in the quiz “The tour to the past times of Russia” will help you to systemize and solidify your knowledge of the Russian history. The participants are to take part in the fascinating quiz and contend with each other; to learn to correlate some events of Russian history and historical figures, to listen to some works of Beethoven and Chaikovsky, and also to see some paintings of the most famous Russian artists –Vasnetsov, Repin, etc.
Scientific-Methodological event “Russia and Russians: a closer look” (panel discussion)
The participants of the educational event can meet teachers and organizers of the project, discuss the content of the educational programs, its effectiveness and prospect, they also can share their thoughts about the programs changing or expanding, offer their own ideas about improving the quality of the educational events and competitions.
All participants of the educational events will be rewarded with the Training Certificates.

Russia is developing international cooperation with Ethiopia in the field of education
During a business trip to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, President of Ulyanovsk State University of Education Igor Petrischev met with President of Addis Ababa University Professor Tassew Woldehanna and discussed areas of cooperation in the field of education.
The university delegation also visited the Ethiopian network of private schools
"Asko Progress", where children from 4 to 16 study according to a
12-year educational course implemented in most African countries. Russian and
Ethiopian specialists have agreed upon opening courses of Russian as a foreign
language and teaching a number of subjects in Russian as well. Representatives
of the Russian delegation noted the interest in learning Russian language among
Ethiopian students and their parents.
Vyacheslav Konnik, leader of the Russian Center of Science and Culture in
Ethiopia, told representatives of the State University of Education about the
peculiarities of the Ethiopian educational system. The parties agreed to hold
joint educational events at the Russian House in Addis Ababa.
Plans for the near future include the implementation of the international
humanitarian project of the Ministry of Education of Russia "Russian
teacher abroad" in schools in Ethiopia. As part of the project, Russian
instructors are to teach Russian language and various subjects in Russian in
seven foreign countries.
Currently, about 70 Ethiopian students study in Russia, 50 of them receive
Russian state scholarships.
Teachers and students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Ulyanovsk State University of Education participated in an online scientific conference in Ethiopia
On 10 and 11 May 2023, an
international scientific conference was held, organized by the College of
Humanities, Linguistics, Journalism and Communication Science of Addis Ababa
University (Ethiopia), in which students and teachers of Ulyanovsk State University
of Education were invited to participate. Associate Professor of the Department
of Romano-Germanic Languages, PhD in Education, G.N. Gmyzina and second-year
graduate student of the Faculty of Foreign Languages O.V. Zatsepin presented a
report highlighting the results of an experiment on the use of a
`subject-language` integrated studying technology in secondary vocational
education.
Teachers and students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages took part in
discussions on topical issues of philology, education and communication
science, which were raised at plenary

On May 30, 2023, President of Ulyanovsk State University of Education Igor Petrischev met in Moscow with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the Russian Federation Mr Uriat Cham Ugala and discussed with him plans for cooperation in the field of education.
Igor Petrischev informed the Ambassador about the results of the visit of the ULSPU delegation to Ethiopia in March, during which a number of meetings took place and preliminary agreements were reached on the implementation of the state task and the development of bilateral cooperation in the field of humanitarian cooperation.
During the visit, a meeting with the directorate of the ASKO PROGRESS network of private schools took place, and the topic of teaching Russian as a foreign language as well as a number of subjects in Russian was discussed.
A meeting was held with the President of the University of Addis Ababa, Professor Tassev Voldehanna, and possible areas of cooperation between the two universities, such as academic exchange were outlined.
During a meeting with a representative of Rossotrudnichestvo in Ethiopia, V.A. Konnick, the two officials discussed the possibility of holding joint educational events at the Russian House in Addis Ababa.
Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary expressed interest in opening the Center for Open Education in Russian and Russian Language Teaching by Ulyanovsk State University of Education in Ethiopia and discussed with the President of UlSPU plans to prepare for the opening of such a center.

President of ULSPU Igor Petrischev took part in the events of the Days of Spiritual Culture in Ethiopia as part of the Russian delegation
At the invitation of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Russian Orthodox Church, representatives of the Center for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and Ulyanovsk State University of Education took part in the events of the Days of Spiritual Culture of Russia in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa). The Russian delegation included President of ULSPU Igor Petrischev.
The delegation presented the projects of the RF Ministry of Education "Russian teacher abroad" and Centers for Open education in Russian language, and also acted as speakers at the round table "Proximity of spiritual and cultural heritage as the basis for the development of Russia and Ethiopia."
The delegation representatives attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition dedicated to the unique heritage of the Kizhi State Museum-Reserve of History, Ethnography and Architecture in the Russian (Pushkin) House in Addis Ababa.
2023 marks the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia.

Russia and Ethiopia will implement joint educational projects with the participation of Ulyanovsk State University of Education
In the Year of the Teacher and Mentor, the RF Ministry of Education carries out large-scale work to promote the Russian language in the world. In the course of a working visit to Addis Ababa, a delegation from the Center for International Cooperation of the RF Ministry of Education and Ulyanovsk State University of Education discussed with colleagues from Ethiopia the prospects for promoting the Russian language and the development of the international humanitarian project "Russian Teacher Abroad".
During the working visit, representatives of the Russian delegation met with the Vice Minister of Education of Ethiopia, Dr. Samuel Kifle Kidane, who is responsible for the development of higher education, and discussed with him the possibilities of further development of relations between the two countries in the field of education. In the course of the meeting President of ULSPU Igor Petrischev presented University`s educational projects to African partners. The projects are planned to be implemented in cooperation with Ethiopian colleagues.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Ethiopia Yevgeny Terekhin confirmed the importance of creating centers for open education in the Russian language and teaching Russian in the region and told about concrete steps to implement the project in Ethiopia.
Acting Director of the Center for International Cooperation of the RF Ministry of Education Sergey Malyshev said that in the new academic year, teachers participating in the international humanitarian project "Russian Teacher Abroad" will arrive in the capital of Ethiopia for the first time. In the near future, with the methodological support of ULSPU, specialized educational programs will be developed for them, taking into account the level of students` competence and national characteristics.
In addition, it is planned to organize joint educational events on the basis of the Russian House in Addis Ababa, develop cooperation between universities, as well as implement joint educational, historical and cultural projects.

During a working visit to the capital of the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, President of Ulyanovsk State University of Education Igor Petrischev held a number of meetings with heads of universities in Ethiopia, where they discussed issues of academic cooperation with ULSPU and teaching Russian as a foreign language at higher educational institutions in Ethiopia. These meetings were held with the support of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Ethiopia Yevgeny Terekhin.
At a meeting with the President of Kotebe University of Education Dr. Barhenemeskel Tena agreements on mutual cooperation with ULSPU in the field of education and language learning were reached. Also productive were negotiations with the Vice-President of Bahir Dar University, Dr. Essey Kebede Muluneh, and the head of the College of Education of this university, Mr. Asnakev Tasele Gared, who expressed their willingness to strengthen ties between the two universities in the field of education. Compatriots from Rossotrudnichestvo are ready to support Ulyanovsk University of Education in the implementation of educational initiatives. ULSPU participates in the process of expanding the range of international educational programs with African countries
At the Russia–Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum, a strategic session of the Russian Ministry of Education “Russia–Africa: transfer of the best educational technologies into the field of general, secondary vocational and additional education” was held. Deputy Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Denis Gribov took part in the event. The president of the Ulyanovsk State University of Education Igor Petrischev worked at the forum as part of the working group of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.
Denis Gribov spoke about international projects of the Russian Ministry of Education, which a number of African countries have already joined to, in the future this cooperation can be expanded.
“Russia offers high-quality educational programs aimed at a wide range of participants. They are related to preschool, general, additional, secondary vocational and higher pedagogical education,” said the Deputy Minister of Education.
One of the topical areas of work has been the international humanitarian project “Russian Teacher Abroad”. Today, more than 400 teachers from our country teach in 232 national schools. The geography of the project is expanding significantly, this year agreements have been reached to send teachers to Egypt, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and negotiations are underway with Equatorial Guinea.
Universities of Education, subordinate to the Ministry of Education of Russia, not only become platforms for training future teachers, but systematic work is carried out here to organize the educational process, train personnel, improve the qualifications of teachers and provide methodological support to specialists.
The creation of centers for open education in Russian and teaching the Russian language continues.
“Today, centers in Algeria and Uganda have joined the five existing open education centers in Cameroon, Tunisia, Egypt, Madagascar and the Seychelles. This is a good tool that makes it possible to promote the Russian language in the world,” commented Denis Gribov.
It should be noted that the Center for Open Education in the Russian language in the capital of Egypt, Cairo, was organized by teachers and specialists from Ulyanovsk State University of Education. As president Igor Petrishchev explained, the Center is designed to support, popularize and promote the Russian language, history and culture in the Arab Republic of Egypt through the implementation of courses developed by university teachers for Egyptian citizens.
Another important area of work is cooperation in the field of additional education for children and the organization of summer holidays. Russian specialists are ready to share their experience, as well as invite representatives of African countries to participate in educational programs at the Stasova International School “Interdom”.
Denis Gribov noted that joint work in the field of secondary vocational education, including the experience of implementing the “Professionality” project, would be useful for African colleagues.
“We are open to cooperation on a wide range of issues,” summed up the Deputy Minister of Education.
Also within the framework of the forum, Denis Gribov held a working meeting with representatives of relevant ministries: the Minister-Delegate for Education, Science, University and Vocational Education of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Purificacien Bohari Lasakero, and the State Minister of Education and Sports of Uganda, Peter Ogwang.
The parties discussed cooperation in the field of education. Representatives of African countries expressed interest in participating in the “Russian Teacher Abroad” project, in specialist training and teacher training programs.
Ulyanovsk State University of Education expands its presence in Ethiopia and builds relations with leading higher education institutions of the country.
As part of the project of the Ministry of Education of Russia, Ulyanovsk State University of Education is developing cooperation with educational organizations of Ethiopia.
Therefore, on 25 September in Moscow, the President of a regional higher education institution of the African republic - Bonga University - Dr Petros Volde Giorgis Volde Senbet met with the President of ULSPU Igor Petrischev and with the acting Director of the Centre for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Education of Russia Sergey Malyshev.
The participants exchanged ideas on cooperation and agreed to sign a Memorandum.
"Joint educational projects between Russia and Ethiopia will help to significantly increase the educational potential of the two countries," says Oksana Mayorova, the director of the Pan-African Cooperation Centre.
Sergey Malyshev greeted the guests: "There is a longstanding connection between Russia and Ethiopia, dictated by the similarity of Christian traditions. Every Russian schoolchild knows that our most famous poet Alexander Pushkin has Ethiopian origin. And we are sincerely glad that Russian-Ethiopian relations are growing stronger these days. I know that the motto of Bonga University is "Together we can". And these words perfectly describe the desire of Russia and Ethiopia to develop the quality of education together".
During the meeting, the President of Bonga University outlined the achievements of the university that managed to create an extensive ecosystem of student training in merely five years. The meeting participants discussed joint Russian-Ethiopian educational projects.
For Ulyanovsk State University of Education, Bonga University is the third Ethiopian university with which an agreement on co-operation has been reached. In July, a delegation from the Centre for International Cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Education visited Addis Ababa.
"During the visit to Africa, ULSPU representatives in cooperation with experts from the Centre for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Education met with the Minister of Higher Education of Ethiopia, the Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, the heads of Kotebe University of Education, BahirDar University and Debre Tabor University, and we also took part in the Days of Russian Culture in Ethiopia", - said Igor Petrischev.
From the beginning of October, Russian teachers will be involved in the education process in the Republic. Currently, a work on the Memorandum is in progress, which is planned to be signed in November.

The aim of the courses is to improve professional competence of students in the field of teaching chemistry, biology and physics in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

The teacher of the Department of Russian Language, Literature and Journalism Anastasia Frolova conducts preparatory organizational activities. For teachers and students their participation in introductory cultural and educational activities dedicated to Russia, such as the quest "Symbols of Russia", quiz "Journey to Russia's past", etc., has become an excellent motivation before the upcoming classes.

More than 100 citizens of the district of Yeka (Addis Ababa) attend classes at Yeki Public Library
They learned more about the peculiarities of Russian history, culture, and national folklore.
After reaching agreements on cooperation with the Department of Culture and Tourism, Ulyanovsk State University of Education started its courses for the citizens of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in another institution - Yeka Public Library in Addis Ababa. Preparations for the opening of the second Center for Open Education are at the final stage.
Previously, classes have already started at the Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (Debre Zeyit), at the Embassy School at the Russian House, at Nativity girls school .
Among the participants there are schoolchildren, students, and young employees from the nearby offices.
UlSPU has prepared various courses for Ethiopian people, focusing on culture, history, literature, folklore and geography. Educational, cultural, scientific and methodological events will also be held for different categories of students.
More than 300 citizens of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia are involved in the educational process.
UlSPU professors start teaching students of the Military Engineering College at the Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
Classes are held in an interactive form for students of the Military Engineering College at the Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (Debre Zeyit).
In accordance with the agreements reached , Center for Open Education started its cultural and educational work under supervision of teachers from Ulyanovsk State University of Education. The events will be held in Russian.
The students chose "Traveling around Russia" as the first program to study. This course will help students to learn about the geography of Russia, its natural and climatic conditions, and the culture of the multitude of nations living in our country.
The program provides such topics as " New Year is Coming Around the Country" dedicated to time zones, "The Russian Bear – More Than Just a bear" or "The White Birch as the Poetic Symbol of the Russian Land " about poetic symbols of Russia, "Mamayev Kurgan and the monument "Motherland Calls!", "St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square", "Valley of Geysers in Kamchatka", "Peterhof", "Mount Elbrus" - about the seven wonders of Russia, a trip through the old cities – "Veliky Novgorod. The Stone Chronicle", "The Guardian of the Russian Land", "Where does Ded Moroz live?", "Ulyanovsk – a City on the Volga, the Homeland of Great Poets and Writers".
Ulyanovsk State University of Education has signed a cooperation agreement with Debre Tabor University (Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia)
At a videoconference meeting with the leadership of Debre Tabor University, President of ULSPU Igor Petrischev spoke about the activities of our university, about innovative educational and scientific projects, and about possible areas of cooperation. The event was attended by the President of Debre Tabor University, Dr. Anegagregn Gashaw Ferede, and the head of the international office, Dr. Abraham. The President noted that the cooperation would favorably contribute to the development of friendly relations between our countries, intercultural cooperation, enrichment of students' knowledge about Russian culture and traditions, exchange of experience, joint research in the field of education and other sciences.
In the first weeks of November, a number of video meetings and negotiations on joint activities with educational organizations of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia took place. Negotiations were also held with Bongo University, Bahir Dar, and the Yeka Public Library in Addis Ababa.
